UCaaS also known as Unified Communications as a Service, is a cloud-based unified communications model that supports six different types of communications functions:
- Enterprise telephony
- Meetings (audio/video/web conferencing)
- Unified messaging
- Instant messaging and presence (personal and team)
- Mobility
- Communications-enabled business processes
The UCaaS setup is owned, operated, and maintained by the provider. The typical characteristics of UCaaS includes multi-tenancy and self-service web portals for provisioning, management, and usage reporting. The provider distributes the applications from a common platform and licenses the service for a monthly charge.
Functions of UCaaS.

Enterprise Telephony
Enterprise Telephony services are enterprise-grade versions of residential VoIP and business VoIP solutions that provide large organizations with advanced features and functionality such as private branch exchange (PBX) capabilities, conference calling, desk-to-desk calling, music on hold, and automation attendants.

Unified Messaging
Unified Messaging is the integration of different forms of communication media that are all stored in one system, implemented into a single interface. In most traditional systems, messaging systems relied on their own systems, servers, or standalone devices.

Communications-enabled business processes
CsEBP is the integration of communications capabilities into software-enabled business procedures, applications, and technologies. CEBP enables communication between applications as well as between applications and humans to automate many components of business processes. The purpose is to optimize those processes and to ensure continuous, low-latency, real-time communications among the customer, suppliers, and employees of an enterprise.

Meetings (audio/ video/ web conferencing)
The term “web conferencing” encompasses collaboration technologies that enable users to place calls via an application over the internet, through software downloaded locally to a computer or device, or in an on-premises environment.

Instant messaging and presence
Form of text-based communication in which two persons participate in a single conversation over their computers or mobile devices within an internet-based chatroom.

Mobility
UCaaS allows for mobility = productivity and collaboration from any location anytime.
